Wowzers! I just realized I haven’t written a blog post about upholstery on here for a LOOOOOOOOONG *ss time :/ WHOOPSIE-DAISY! I mean it’s not like I haven’t been working, because, well, I DEFINITELY have been. It’s just that business has been good [like really good – so grateful kind of good] that I have fallen behind on editing my #beforeandafter pictures to share with y’all. I’ll try to do better, but no promises 😉 today, while we make our way to Palm Springs for Vanessa Balli and Rick Moorten’s wedding [yes, it’s finally here!!] I thought I would share with you a chair that’s been keeping me awake at night. A chair that was a lion in sheep’s clothing. A chair that turned out rad but almost made me quit my day job. Yes, the chair you see below was that kind of chair. A real b*tch.
Now, I know that I’ve called a piece of furniture a b*tch before, so this isn’t the first time and probably won’t be the last. HOWEVER, this was not the chair I thought it was when I made the bid for it. Nope, it seemed like your run of the mill chair. Sure, it was a bit odd in shape, but nothing I couldn’t handle, right?! WRONG! Well, I mean I did handle it . . . in the end . . . AFTER it knocked this EGO of mine down a few notches. Haha! See, the issue with this chair was the base, the frame, whatever you want to call it – “it” was 95% metal. Yes, you read that right. It was metal = meaning that I couldn’t just stretch fabric and staple it. NO SIREE BOB! Instead, the good ole Universe thought this upholstery artist needed a challenge, needed a nail bitter, needed a chair to question her very existence. Yeah, sort of intense, huh?? BUT THAT’S BECAUSE IT WAS PLUS A COUPLE DOZEN BAGS OF POTATO CHIPS!! I honestly panicked, next cried, then thought, “I have no business running an upholstery business,” cried some more, and then FINALLY unraveled myself, called an upholstery colleague [we both had the same mentor] and figured this monster out. Long story short, it’s pretty much a tacked down slip cover, which was entirely WAAAY too time-consuming with its constantly needing to be taken off to make adjustments and then put back on to see if it was correct . . . yeah, put THAT on repeat for twenty-some odd times and see what it does to your creative brain 😉 the only part of the chair that was wood was a two-foot by two-foot square underneath the seat of the chair, so other than that there was no stapling and LOTS of blind stitch by hand going on.
“Never give up, and be confident in what you do. There may be tough times, but the difficulties which you face will make you more determined to achieve your objectives and to win against all the odds.” — Marta
At the end of the day though, I DO realize it was a HUGE learning experience for me both as an artist and a business owner = for one, I should DEFINITELY examine pieces of furniture more closely before I agree to take them on [LOL] but more importantly, that I can do whatever I put my mind too, and THAT, well, that’s pretty dang powerful stuff, folks! I hope you enjoyed seeing the fruits of my labor today and will try to share more real soon 🙂 have a wonderful weekend and stay tuned to my Instastories for #BTS clips of the biggest SoCal wedding of the year!!
This just may be my favorite piece that you have done. You are to be congratulated for not giving up. I’m very proud of you❤️
A beautiful transformation… from crystalline form to a butterfly!
I just wanted to say how happy I am that we both ended up here, and even though we don’t spend a ton of time together I do honestly treasure the time we do hang out. I’m so proud of you and your many talents and proud to say you’re my friend. Love you, skank face.
